What are the Fatal Four?

On Behalf of | Feb 2, 2025 | Workplace Accidents |

When looking at total job-related fatalities, the construction industry in the United States often has the highest numbers. This has led many to refer to it as the most dangerous industry in the country.

Even within construction, officials have identified four specific categories that account for most fatal accidents. These are known as the “Fatal Four.” It is important for workers to be aware of these hazards so they can take steps to protect themselves, understand how these accidents occur and know their rights if they are injured or lose a loved one.

Electrocution injuries

Electrocutions sometimes occur when workers make contact with overhead power lines. There can also be risks if electrical systems are not shut down before work begins, such as when an electrician wires a new outlet into a live circuit.

Caught-between accidents

These include incidents involving heavy machinery, such as a worker becoming entangled in a conveyor belt. They also refer to accidents like trench collapses, where workers can be caught between or buried under shifting soil.

Struck-by accidents

Some of these accidents involve vehicles on construction sites, such as dump trucks backing up. Others occur when workers are struck by falling objects, such as power tools, 2x4s or other materials dropped from above.

Falls

Falls are the number one cause of fatal construction accidents. This includes slip-and-fall accidents, trip-and-fall accidents, falls from ladders and falls from elevated levels. Even a short fall can be extremely dangerous, especially if the worker suffers a head injury.

If you have lost a loved one or been injured in the construction industry, take the time to carefully explore all of your legal options.
