Realizing that your marriage is over can bring up a vast array of emotions. You may think about all the time you wasted in the marriage, but you might also dread having to start over. This may induce stress, but you can take steps to reduce that.

One of the most important things for you to remember right now is to focus on what’s best for you and your children as you go through this. Your ex will focus on what they think is best for them and the kids.

Set up your finances

If you and your ex both worked, you’re going to have to figure out how to live on your own income only. This can be challenging. Setting up your finances and looking at your new budget can clue you into what you need to fight for and what to let go of during the property division process.

Plan for the first year

The first year after divorce gives way to the most changes. You may realize that you have to come up with new traditions for special days, such as birthdays or holidays. You might need a new circle of friends. Finding new hobbies might become a priority. Try to plan for this first year so that you aren’t blindsided by things that come up.

Going through a divorce is an emotionally trying time. Not only do you have to worry about what the future holds for you, but you also have to think about how you can untangle yourself from your ex. Working with someone who’s familiar with the issues in your divorce is beneficial, so you can find out your options and determine what’s best for your needs.
