Is divorce better or worse for the children?

On Behalf of | Mar 26, 2025 | Divorce |

When parents are considering a divorce, one issue they often face is trying to determine what will be best for their children. For instance, some believe that divorce is always worse for children, so they choose to “stay together for the kids” even when they know they want to get divorced.

But is this actually true? The reality is that every situation is unique. There is no one-size-fits-all answer. Parents need to consider their children’s specific needs, their relationships, why the divorce may be occurring and many other factors.

A high-conflict living situation

For example, one factor to consider is the amount of conflict in the home. Some research finds that children who live in a high-conflict home environment inherently have to deal with a significant amount of stress. When couples are fighting constantly, getting divorced can actually be better for the children because it removes them from this stress.

Moreover, constant disagreements between parents can reduce their ability to care for their children effectively. After divorce, some parents find that they are much better able to focus on their kids, meet their needs and forge strong relationships with them. In this sense, divorce could actually be beneficial for the children, strengthening their relationships with both parents.

Moving toward divorce

Getting divorced with children can be complex, and you need to consider your custody rights. You and your ex will likely need to divide both physical and legal custody of the children, and disputes are common. If you are in this position, be sure you know what legal steps to take.
